Cat silhouette filled with pine trees on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cat seen from behind, sitting upright, is outlined in fine grey linework, with a stand of pine trees shaded in dots and fine strokes filling its body and tail. The stippled shading is soft and grey, giving the forest a misty, textured look against the pale skin. The design sits on the forearm with clear skin around it, and the photograph is taken straight on.

Sit yourselves down and mind the kettle, because this is the bit where my knees start complaining. You want to know why the Halloran cat never came down off the rock at Scarrow Head? I'll tell you, and you can make of it what you like.

The keeper's cat was called Tansy, a grey thing with a tail like a bell rope, and she came over on the supply boat the winter the lamp was first lit. Nobody wanted a cat that rode out every gale on the gallery rail, but she would not be put off. Old Mrs Cready swore the animal could see the mainland trees through solid fog, and that she sat with her back to the sea because she was keeping watch over the forest that had grown there before the sea took it.

Every night when the beam swung round, Tansy sat on the sill with her tail wrapped tight, and every night the keeper, a man called Eli Dunnock, told her the same thing: "You're hunting ghosts, you daft beast." She never answered. She only twitched at the sound of the bell.

Then came the night the boat failed to come home, and Eli went out with the lantern to the end of the breakwater. Tansy followed him over the wet stones, and when the fog closed in she stopped, sat upright and stared into the white. Eli looked where she was looking and saw, faint at first and then plain as a hymn, the dark spires of pines standing up out of the water. He shouted the boat's name into the murk, and somewhere past the rocks a horn answered him. They came in steering by that black line of trees, the way the cat had been staring all along, and they came in with the tide.
