Cat silhouette filled with pine trees on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A seated cat seen from behind is outlined in fine, pale linework and filled with dark pine trees, with the tail curling down towards the wrist. The shading is built from fine stippled dots and soft grey tones, giving the trees a misty, textured look. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a grey jumper sleeve and denim.

Dear Nell,

The cat came back at ten past four, which is the only time I can reliably set a clock by. She sat on the cooling rack with her back to me, the way she does, facing the square of black glass where the back door should be. Beyond the bins is the strip of Scots pine the council never got round to felling, and at this hour the trees and the night are the same colour. I have stopped trying to tell them apart.
I started the sourdough at half one, same as you showed me, folding the dough four times while the radio murmured the shipping forecast to nobody. Mrs Abernethy's rye needs the oven at five-forty or it sulks. Marrow watched every fold. When I turned round she had left a line of flour prints across the bench, neat as stitches, and her tail was hanging off the end of the rack like a question I had not been asked.
At ten to six I propped the back door with a sack of strong white and let the cold in. She jumped down without a sound, walked to the bins, and stopped. Then she looked back at me over her shoulder, the way she used to look at you when you were late with her tins, and went off between the trunks until the dark took her tail last.
The first van came up the hill as the sky went grey. The loaves were out, the bench was dusted white with her footprints, and the pines had settled back into being trees. She always leaves the way she arrives, unhurried and a little bit smug. Come home soon. The bread is better when you are here to complain about it.
Love, Kath
