Sitting cat outline on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo shows a cat sitting with its back to the viewer, its head turned slightly, whiskers drawn on one side and its tail curling out to the left. The linework is a single thin, even black line with no shading. The tattoo sits alone on pale skin against a striped fabric background, with the framing centred on the leg.

Sorrel had sat on the churchyard wall at Hallow Ferry every Sunday since the flood year, and in all that time she had never once turned round to face the lych gate. Folk said she was keeping an eye on the river. Folk said plenty that summer, mostly about the Cawdrey brothers and the strip of water meadow they had been fighting over since their father's funeral.

On the morning of the wedding, Tom Cawdrey came up the lane in his good coat with a bucket of sweet peas for the bride, and found the cat exactly where she always was, her tail curled out to the left like a question drawn in ink. He crouched beside her. "I was a fool about the hedge," he told her. "You can tell him I said so." She kept her back to him, her ears angled at nothing, and he took that as the answer he had earned.
Inside the chapel, Ned was tying his cravat for the fourth time while the vicar pretended not to notice the length of string in his pocket. Ivy had made one condition before she would say yes: the stakes would come up, the meadow would be shared, and both brothers would carry the first posy to their father's grave together. Neither had agreed. Neither had refused. Ned came out of the vestry, saw the peas on the wall, and stopped dead in the gravel.
Sorrel finally stood, stretched, and dropped down onto the path, leaving the wall empty. In the dust where she had been sitting lay the neat print of her paws, and they ran straight through the gate and up the aisle, as if she had only been waiting for someone else to move first. Ned lifted the bucket. Tom took the other handle. Between them they carried the sweet peas into the chapel, the cat trotting ahead with her tail held high.
