Cat silhouette with galaxy and flowers on collarbone

Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo

Two close-up photographs show a small tattoo of a seated cat silhouette on the upper chest near the collarbone. The cat is filled with blue and purple galaxy shading with tiny star specks, and light blue flowers and dark fern sprigs sit beside its tail. The soft, blended colour and the plain skin background keep the tattoo as the clear focus.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the wasps in the windfalls. No, leave the bucket where it is. You'll want your hands free for the catching. That was the last August before the Hallam orchard was sold, and the cat was called Ember, though she was grey as porridge. Her name came from the way she lay in the warm dust under the Bramley trees at dusk, glowing like a coal someone had forgotten to put out.

She would not come in at night. Every evening Mrs Hallam stood on the back step calling her, rattling the biscuit tin, and every evening the cat sat up on the wall between the rows with her tail curled round her feet, staring at the sky as if it owed her money. The men who came to pick the fruit said she was listening for something. Mrs Hallam said she was simply stubborn, which is the same thing in a cat.

Then one night late in August the sky came down to meet her. Not all of it, mind. Only a patch the size of a tea towel, dark blue and freckled with tiny white sparks, and it settled over her like a blanket. When Mrs Hallam ran out with the lamp, there was no cat on the wall. There was only a shape cut neatly out of the stars, sitting up as proud as you please, with a fern trailing from one side and a spray of pale blue flowers at her tail, the sort that grow in the hedge bottoms where nobody thinks to look.

The shape never fell back into the orchard. Every late August after that, a new blue flower opened by the wall, and the pickers left the windfalls for her. Mrs Hallam said she never minded. A cat who had gone up into the sky to sit for a while was only doing what the rest of us had been meaning to do all summer. So she put a saucer of milk on the wall each night, just in case the cat wanted to come down for a bit.
