Tabby cat face with blossom sprig
Fine line · Chest · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a grey tabby cat's face with green eyes, pink-tinted ears and a fine dark outline. Below the face sits a sprig of pink blossom with green leaves and a thin stem. The soft, light shading and open composition sit neatly in the centre of the torso against pale skin.

The grey tabby came to the Hollin pit the winter the old engine house was pulled down, and nobody in Ashby Row could say who had let her in. She sat on the lamp bench beside the cage, green-eyed and unbothered, and the men called her Mistress Sprig because she always had a flower caught in her ruff when she came up from the lower roads in spring.

Her habit was plain enough. When the air in the far roadway turned thick and sweet, she would stand, flatten her ears, and walk the length of the tunnel without looking back. Wattie Crane, who was too proud to listen to anyone under forty, followed her once with a candle in a tin. He came back grey-faced and told the deputy the cat had led him to a fall of roof that had not yet fallen. They brought the shift up that afternoon, every man of them.
Years later, when the colliery had closed and half the row had emptied for the south, a girl from the village climbed the spoil heap in April. The hawthorn on the bank had broken into pink, and the cat sat in the middle of it with blossom caught around her neck like a collar. The girl said the animal looked up at her as if to say the mine was finished with them and it was time to go home.
Nobody in Ashby Row saw the cat again, but every April a sprig of blossom turned up on the old lamp bench, and nobody ever said who had left it there.
