Tabby cat in a flower wreath on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A grey tabby cat sits facing forward inside a circular wreath of small flowers in purple and red, linked by green leaves. The cat is shaded in greys with fine, delicate linework and fills most of the centre of the design. The tattoo sits on the outer thigh against plain pale skin, with dark clothing at the top of the frame.

The cat had been at the lavender again by the time Maureen Pargeter reached the village hall marquee, and she said so loudly enough that the tea urn went quiet. Three of the wreaths on the long trestle table had gaps in them, neat bites of purple where stems had been pulled out and carried off under a table. Everyone knew whose cat it was. Nobody had ever managed to shut Biscuit in a shed.

Judging had been set for half past two. Maureen had the clipboard, the rosettes in a biscuit tin, and a sensible view of wreaths: wire frame, foliage first, flowers last, nothing so fussy it would not survive a car journey to the church. She walked the table with her reading glasses on a cord, marking sheets with a biro that kept skipping. At the far end, a wreath of valerian, sweet william and a single fat rosebud sat undisturbed, and beside it, in the exact centre of the table, sat Biscuit, grey and striped, looking at her as though he had been invited.
She opened her mouth to shoo him and found she could not. The sun came through the marquee flap and lit the cat's tail curled round his paws, and the flowers at his feet seemed to be arranged by someone with a patient eye. She wrote down a score she had not meant to write. Then she wrote another.
When the rosettes went out, the first went to the valerian wreath, and its maker, a retired dentist called Mr Okafor who had never once come second, looked at the cat and then at Maureen. "He's been sitting there since noon," Maureen said. "I think he's a judge too." Biscuit blinked slowly and went back to the lavender.
