Seated cat with bell collar on chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a seated cat seen from the front, with closed eyes, whiskers and a collar with a bell. The linework is mostly thin and unshaded, with a few heavier strokes for emphasis. The tattoo sits on pale skin near the collarbone, and a gold chain is visible at the top left of the frame.

The bell on the grey cat's collar had not rung in eleven years, and nobody at Hollin Vale court remembered it had ever been loud. You were the under-clerk who wound the palace clocks each dawn, and you were the only one who still cupped a hand to your ear when you passed the kitchen step, where the cat sat with its eyes shut and its paws tucked beneath its chest like a loaf someone had forgotten to bake.

The silence was the chamberlain's doing. The queen had lost her signet ring in the moat the winter the bell went quiet, and the chamberlain, who wanted the thing found without anyone being blamed, decided that a cat who sat so still must be guilty of stillness. He packed the clapper with wool so the cat could not ring its way out of suspicion. The cat did not object. It simply went on sleeping, which is what cats in fables are for, and you began to suspect it was waiting.
On the night of the frost fair you took the scissors from the clock room and cut the wool free. The bell gave one note, thin and sharp, and every shutter in the east wing rattled open. Somewhere below came the clatter of a dropped bucket, then running feet. The cat stood, stretched, and walked down the steps without looking back, straight to the moat's edge where the ice had cracked.
When you followed with the lamp, you found the signet lying on a flat stone, still in the scrap of linen it had been wrapped in, gleaming like a coin. The chamberlain was disgraced before breakfast. The cat returned to its warm slate and closed its eyes again. You still wind the clocks, and you still listen, because one small note is enough to remind a court where it has been looking.
