Two black and grey tattoos on the thighs: a cat skull with a dotted outline on the left and a snarling three-eyed cat on the right.

Cat skull and three-eyed cat on thighs

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two tattoos sit side by side on the upper legs above the knees. The left shows a cat skull in profile, with a dotted outline of a cat head behind it, and the right shows a cat face with three eyes and an open mouth showing teeth. Both are rendered in fine etched linework with dense hatching for shading, in black ink and grey tones against a plain skin background with blurred greenery behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow came over the pass on the third day of Advent and shut the road below the inn at Thornesgate. Agnes Huddle had two guests that night, a drover and a boy with frost-bitten fingers, and one cat, a grey tom called Pell who had walked in off the moor the winter before and never gone out again.

Pell had three eyes. Two were ordinary and copper-coloured and bad-tempered, and the third sat above them like a knot in oak. Agnes said it was how he saw weather coming. The drover said it was how he saw thieves. The boy said nothing, because he had watched the cat stare at the empty settle by the hearth and spit at it, and the settle had been empty since the old landlord died in it with his boots on.

When Pell died under the stable eaves, Agnes's husband cleaned his skull with lye and hung it on a nail behind the bar, so the house would have something to remember him by. In the morning Pell was back on the hearthrug, grey and smug, with snow on his whiskers. He did this every winter after that. The skull stayed on its nail, its teeth bared at the door.

On the last night of the blizzard the drover heard a cart creak up the pass, though no cart could have climbed it. Pell rose, stretched, and walked to the door. He sat on the step with the third eye wide open and watched the white road until the cart's lantern came through the drifts and went past without stopping. Agnes put more peat on the fire. Pell came back in, shook the snow off, and slept with his back to the nail.
