Two black and grey dotwork tattoos on forearms that together show a cat's head split down the middle within geometric triangles.

Split cat head in triangles on forearms

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show a cat's head divided between them, with each half set inside a triangular outline. The cat's eyes, ears, nose and whiskers are built up with fine stippled dots, with heavier shading on the darker side. The design is entirely black and grey, with a dotted arc above the ears and the triangle outlines framing each half.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had turned the sodium lamps on Harrow Lane into smeared coins, and Nell had counted the bus shelter's dotted advertisements twice before the driver called out the fare again. Behind the Crown Laundrette a cat sat on the bins, one side of its face lit orange, the other lost in shadow. It had been there since Tuesday.

Marek ran the late bakery across the road and said the cat belonged to nobody, which was what he said about everything he fed. He cut a heel of yesterday's rye in two and held out the pieces, one in each hand, as if he knew something about halves. "It won't take both," he said. "Only ever one side at a time."

The cat took the left piece, then turned so its right eye caught the lamp, and Nell understood he had not meant the bread. She had carried half a letter for a month, torn along a fold, the other half folded into a jumper in her sister's wardrobe in Glasgow. Neither of them had written since the spring, and the paper had gone soft at the edges from being held too often.

She knelt on the wet pavement and laid her half on the lid of the nearest bin. The cat stepped down, sniffed the corner of the page, and settled beside it with its tail wrapped round its feet. Nell left them there under the dripping tin awning and walked home counting lamps, each one a dot on a line that ran back to the flat, where she would start the second half of the letter before the kettle boiled.
