Cat skull on the chest

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic cat skull faces forward, with large upright ears, deep eye sockets and visible fangs and teeth. The shading is smooth and detailed, with bone highlights set against dark grey and black shadow, and fine stippling along the nasal bridge. The design is in black ink only and is centred on a pale chest, with the edges of the skin fading out of frame.

The science block at St Agnes had been knocked down years ago, but the cupboard in the hall still had the old lab's padlock, and Maureen Clegg was working at it with a hairpin while the buffet cooled behind her. Mr Harrow had boiled it clean in the sink after the ginger tom from Cragg Lane died under the bus outside the gates. The class named it Duchess. It had large upright ears of bone, a row of fangs like sharpened pegs, and two eye sockets so deep you could lose a biro in them. In the summer of 1984 Maureen had lifted it for a dare, and had kept it in her satchel for the rest of term, telling it things she would not tell anyone living.

She carried it out now, wrapped in a tea towel, and set it on the trestle between the trifle and the raffle tickets. A solicitor from the year below, bald and pleased with himself, laughed and asked if it was still biting. Someone else said it was the most honest face in the room. Maureen didn't answer. She was watching the old biology teacher, Mrs Ellery, now ninety and in a wheelchair, who had wheeled herself over and was staring at the skull with no expression at all.

"You kept her," Mrs Ellery said. "I always knew you would."

Maureen tucked the tea towel back around the bone. Outside, the car park lights came on one by one, and she thought of the satchel, the dare, and the many years she had carried something that had never once asked her to carry it.
