A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The duck arrived at Harrowgate Fair the summer the carousel horses lost their paint, riding in the back of a coal lorry with his cap pulled low. The cap was cyan and sat crooked, and someone had painted a heart on its crown with the word MOM curling underneath, the way the showman's wife did for every stray who came to her with a story and no luggage. She asked no questions. She only said that nobody should go to sea without his mother's name on him, and the duck nodded as if he knew exactly which sea she meant.

He was given the coconut shy. Children queued for it because he grinned at them with a mouth full of teeth like rows of tin tacks, and the grin never faded, even when they missed. Nobody asked why pink ran down his chin in long wet strings, or why the cobbles under the stall were always speckled after closing. Nell, the showman's daughter, swept them every morning without complaint, which her father said was the sensible thing to do with a mystery.

Each night, when the lamps went out, the duck climbed into the last car of the big wheel and rode it to the top. From there, he said, you could see the coast if you squinted hard enough. Nell asked what he was looking for. He said he was waiting for a ship that had left without him, and that his mother had promised to write the moment it docked. The wheel creaked and swayed. Nell climbed the rungs in her stockings, sat beside him, and took a paper heart from her pocket, cut from the back of a ticket, with MOM written inside it in her best hand, the letters leaning like little boats.

She pinned it beside the painted one. In the morning the stall stood tidy and the cobbles were clean, and the cap lay folded on the counter with the paper heart still crooked on its crown, the letters leaning toward a sea none of them had seen.
