Cat slogan t-shirt with sleeve tattoos
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A man wears a white crew-neck t-shirt with grey block lettering reading In the event of an emotional breakdown, place cat here, above a line drawing of a cat lying on its back. Both arms are covered in dense black and grey tattoos from the upper arm to the forearm, though the individual motifs are hard to make out. The photo is a front-facing studio shot with the head cropped out of frame and a plain light background.

The box arrived on a Tuesday with a grey tabby called Admiral folded inside it like a spare umbrella. Dora Penhallow read the instructions on the flap three times before she accepted that they were serious. The Library's rules were printed in green capitals: In the event of an emotional breakdown, place cat here. Below that was an arrow, and the arrow pointed at the kitchen lino.

Dora had not asked for a cat. She had asked, in a rather weepy email to her sister, whether anybody in the world still answered the phone after nine. Her sister had replied with a link. The Library lent animals by the week to people who were overwhelmed, and it kept a waiting list of three years for the good ones. Admiral was a stray from the docks who had once bitten a surveyor and never apologised for it.
For the first hour she sat on the floor beside him with a mug going cold. Admiral rolled onto his back, all four paws in the air like a dropped table, and regarded her upside down with total indifference. He did not purr. He did not require anything. At one point he sneezed at the radiator, and Dora laughed so hard she had to lie down next to him, which was, she supposed, the whole idea.
When the Library collected him on Friday, the woman with the clipboard asked how the placement had gone. Dora said it had gone very well and that she had cried only twice, both times during the good bits of a quiz show. The clipboard woman ticked a box marked Resolved. Admiral, already in the carrier, looked back at Dora through the mesh as if to ask whether she had really thought she could keep him.
