The owl came to Harrowby Junction the winter the signal box stove went out. Nobody in the village could say where it roosted. It sat on the gutter of the waiting room with its feathers puffed against the sleet, and when the last goods train had clanked through, it turned its head slowly to watch the platform, as if counting the lamps.

The porter, Tom Nabb, found the first bunch on the bench on a Monday. Wild primrose and a sprig of ivy, tied with green wool. On Tuesday there were more, and a few oak leaves pressed flat inside the timetable. He asked the stationmaster, who said the trains were not in the business of leaving posies, and he asked the owl, which said nothing, being an owl.
So on the Thursday Tom sat in the dark with a shuttered lantern and waited. Near midnight a girl came up out of the cutting with her boots full of mud and a fistful of flowers. She laid them on the bench the way you'd lay a coat over a sleeping dog. The owl dropped from the gutter and settled on her shoulder as easily as a glove. She told Tom the railway had cut through her grandmother's orchard, and the trains had never once slowed for the old trees. The flowers were for anyone who sat waiting in a cold place and forgot that someone had planted things for them.
In April the fence along the down platform was green with ivy and dotted with primrose that nobody had planted. The stationmaster stopped complaining. Every express that came through slowed a little as it passed the owl on the nameboard, and the driver lifted one hand from the window.
