Cat whiskers tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A simple black cat face is drawn on the side of a finger, with a small triangular nose, two dot eyes and three whiskers on each side. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The finger is held up against a blurred background of long wavy blonde hair, and the subject's face is out of frame.

Dear Ivy, I have finally got the whiskers sorted, though not in the way the sign-writer intended. You'll remember Mr Okonedo from the pier, the one who once painted a whole lifeboat with a seagull that looked like a bishop. He came to the back door on Tuesday with his brushes in a biscuit tin and offered to do Tibbs's face on the side of my finger so the harbour children would stop calling me the cat lady. I said yes because I was tired of explaining.

He used a pen, not a brush, and the lines were so thin they seemed to be listening. Three whiskers each side, a nose like a folded pip, two dots for eyes. He said a face on a finger is the only portrait that never needs a frame, and then he charged me four shillings, which is the sort of thing a man says when he has no intention of giving you change.
Here is the strange part. Since then the gulls on the breakwater have stopped going for my sandwiches. Tibbs, who is eleven and fat and has never once left the bakery, sits on the sill each morning and stares at my hand as if it owes him rent. Last night he climbed onto my knee and pushed his head into the finger, very gently, the way a cat checks a door is shut. I cannot tell you if the magic is in the ink or in the cat, but I am not going to wash it off to find out.
Yours in whiskers, Maud
