Cat whiskers tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink cat face on the side of an extended finger, showing a small triangular nose, two dot eyes and three whiskers on each side. The linework is thin and uniform, and the design is solid black with no shading. The finger fills the foreground against a blurred background of wavy blonde hair, a dark top and a small heart pendant necklace.

You learn early at the Crook and Lantern that a cat's whiskers are a ruler. Mrs Oddie says so every January when the snow piles against the back door and the cat, Pim, sits on the sill and pushes his face out to measure the gap. If his whiskers clear the frame, the draught will too, and you may stop stuffing the gap with rags and old almanacs.

The snow has been falling since Tuesday. Nobody has come up the lane for three days, not the coal man, not the vicar, not the pedlar who still owes you a shilling. You sit by the range with the ledger open and count the candles. Pim watches you from the windowsill with his eyes half closed, dignified as a magistrate, his whiskers twitching at the cold glass.

On the fourth morning a knock comes at the back door. It is a small knock, the sort a child makes, and when you crack the door the drift has already reached the handle. A boy stands there holding a lantern and a tin box. His mother's fever has broken, he says, and he has been sent for the doctor, but the doctor's road is shut. Pim slides past your ankles, sniffs the boy's wet boots, then sits down on the step as if the matter is settled.

You measure the gap with Pim's whiskers, and it is wide enough. You fetch the spare sledge, wrap the tin box in your shawl, and walk the boy to the top of the fell where the lane runs out. Pim does not come. He stays by the range, guarding the hearth and the ledger, and when you return at dusk with snow on your shawl he is asleep with his nose tucked under one paw, whiskers spread across the floorboards like lines on a map nobody has needed until now.
