Cat whiskers tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a cat's face, showing a nose, a small mouth and whiskers extending to both sides, sits along the side of a finger. The linework is thin and even with simple solid black ink and no shading. The finger is held in the foreground against a blurred background of blonde hair, a denim jacket and a heart pendant necklace, with purple nail polish visible at the fingertip.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate inn for three days, and Mrs Pryce had run out of patience before she ran out of coal. The cat had been no help. He sat on the end of the bar and watched the fire as though it owed him money, his whiskers twitching every time the wind rattled the shutters.

Tom the potboy had been set to polishing the pewter, which he did badly, and he was the first to notice the cat had gone missing. They found him at last in the flour loft, asleep on a sack with one paw tucked under his chin. Tom reached for him and the cat opened one eye and stared at the boy's hand the way a magistrate looks at a liar.

Mrs Pryce laughed until she had to sit down on the stairs. She took a black pen from her apron and drew a little face on the tip of Tom's middle finger, a nose, a small mouth and whiskers out to either side, so that when he held his hand up to the cat it looked as if the two of them were having a serious conversation. The cat considered the finger, then the boy, then flicked his tail and climbed onto Tom's shoulder as though the matter were settled.

By the time the road was cleared on the Thursday, half the village had walked up the hill to see the finger. Nobody could say which of them had been the cleverer, the cat or the landlady, and Tom never scrubbed the ink off, letting it wear away in its own good time.
