Sitting cat outline on the lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black line forms the outline of a cat seen side on, sitting upright with pointed ears and a tail curling at its base. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or added detail. The small design sits alone on pale skin, with the photograph framed close around the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are the night steward of Halcyon Deep, and the corridor lights dim to amber at the hour when nobody else is awake. Tonight the hull sensors report a warm shape pressed against the observation glass on Deck Nine, low to the floor, and you know before you check the log what it must be. The ship has carried no animals for three hundred and eleven years. The last cat, Marrow, died in a hydroponics bay before you were decanted, and her name survives only in the maintenance archive and in the one drawing that every child on board learns to copy.

You walk down with your boots loud on the grating. The thing at the glass is not a cat. It is a bundle of old heat leaking from a cooling duct, a ghost the air handlers throw back at the window, and yet its outline is exactly the sitting figure from the archive: upright, ears sharp, tail curled round its base like a question mark. You lift your hand to the pane and trace the silhouette in the condensation, one unbroken stroke, the way Marrow's keeper once taught the first schoolchildren, so that the line never lifts from the glass.

When you finish, the tail closes and the warmth settles, and for a moment the shape seems to wait for you with the stillness of something that has decided to stay. You think about the rule that says the ship must spend nothing on sentiment. You think about the beds that need a second pass of fungus-lamps before the shift changes. Then you press your palm flat over the drawing, the way you would over a sleeping animal's back, and you tell the duct vent to hold its temperature until morning.
