Cat whiskers tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo shows a cat's nose, mouth and whiskers, with three whisker lines drawn on each side of the face. The linework is thin and even, and the design is in solid black ink with no shading or colour. It sits across the side of a finger, with a blurred background of blonde hair, a pendant necklace and a denim jacket.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat at the Michaelmas fair had only ever been seen from the side, because she would not turn her face to a crowd. Tomas Greaves, who ran the coconut shy and the cart of hot chestnuts, swore she had three whiskers a side, one for each hour of the working day, and that any child who touched them would be granted a wish before the caravans moved on.

Mabel Pring, nine years old and sharp as a pin, came to the wagon with a sixpence and a made-up errand from her grandmother. The cat sat on the tailboard, grey as ash, and watched her with eyes like two wet pennies. Mabel held out one finger. The cat leaned in, slow as a bishop at a christening, and let the finger pass along her cheek, from the black nose out past the last whisker on each side.

Nothing happened, which Mabel thought was rude. She went back to the shy and lost her sixpence and her temper together. But the next morning the fairground was packed away, the wagons had gone south without anyone saying goodbye, and on the mud by the gate someone had drawn a cat's face with a stick, neat as a ruler. Her mother said it was the rain. Mabel knew better.

The dark mark stayed on her finger for a fortnight, a thin line she could not scrub away with carbolic or salt. She never wished for a pony or a new coat. She wished, very quietly, that the cat would come back and find her, and in the years after she checked every hedge and wagon road for a grey shape waiting on the tailboard.
