He never saw it proper. He saw the mud pressed flat where something big had lain, and two pointed hollows in the frost where ears had been, and once a trail of small prints leading from the compost heap to the gate and stopping dead, as if whatever made them had simply decided to be somewhere else. Grandad was a practical man. He put a bowl of wet bran and a jar of honey by the hedge and told nobody.
Then my mother, who was seven and had a pencil she was not supposed to have, lay on her belly in the wet and drew it on the back of a seed packet. She drew it in one line, the way Grandad had told her a creature like that would only sit for. Round back, two peaked ears, a face with whiskers like a fistful of grass, a belly that touched the ground. She never lifted the pencil, and the line never broke.
The bran was gone the next morning. The seed packet was not. And pressed into the mud at the foot of the gate was one small print the size of a thumb, heading back towards the hedge.
