The frost had sealed the yard gate shut by six, so Nell carried the bucket of skimmed milk round by the midden and set it down on the back step. Tibbs was already there, sitting with his back to the kitchen door the way he always did in January, facing the lane where the bus used to stop. He had grown thin since the first hard week. His tail lay wrapped round his feet like a loose rope, and the tip flicked whenever a crow landed on the wall.

"He's not coming back by the lane, you know," said Dev, who had come up from the lower field with the dog at his heels. He said it kindly, the way he said most things. Nell did not answer. She knew the lane was a long grey line under the hedges and that nothing moved along it but the wind and the odd tractor from Hollins Farm. Her son had gone to Leeds in October with one suitcase and a promise to ring on Sundays. The phone had rung twice.

That evening she found Tibbs on the windowsill of the spare room, where the boy used to sleep, his head turned towards the glass and his whiskers pressed flat by the cold. She sat on the edge of the bed and watched him until the lamp in the yard came on and his shadow stretched long across the floorboards. He did not look round when she spoke.

In the morning the bucket was empty and the step was dusted white. Nell left the back door open a crack, as the boy had liked it, and went to put the kettle on.
