Fine line constellation tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small constellation of seven or so tiny black dots, linked by fine dotted lines in a V or J shape, sits on the side of the ribcage. The linework is delicate and even, with the star points slightly larger than the connecting dots. The image is black ink on skin with a soft, neutral background and grey fabric draped across the lower edge.

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out and I am too old to shout over the pumps. You want the one about the Hook, the crook of stars the old navigators carried on their skin, because by the time the Carrow left the dock they had no screens left to trust. Drink your water first. It tastes of rust, but it is honest.

The navigator was Ebba Tulloch, and she had one job aboard the Marigold Reach: keep the crew from drifting into the dark between Harbour Station and the Wexley Belt. Nobody remembers now why the charts failed. What they remember is that she inked the route onto her own ribs, seven points of light joined by a line of dots, because a dotted line is what you draw when you know a thing is there but cannot yet see all of it. She said the dots were the bits of sky you trusted.

Every watch she pressed two fingers under her shirt, found the bright points, and counted them off like beads. The crew laughed at her for it. Then the coolant leaked in the sixth ring, the mapping engine went blind, and it was Ebba who stood in the cold corridor calling the turns to the pilot by the shape of her own bones: long reach to the left star, then the dotted run, then the far point where the hull opened onto light.

They docked at Wexley on the nineteenth day. Ebba never had the ink taken off, though the clinic on Harbour offered twice. When people asked why she kept the dots, she said they were the only map she had ever needed, and that a line is only ever a promise to keep walking.
