Dot constellation on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of small black dots is scattered across the inner forearm in an irregular pattern, resembling a star constellation. The dots are uniform in size and appear to be applied as single points of solid ink, with no outlines or shading. The pale skin, black ink and plain maroon fabric at the edge of the frame keep the focus on the tattoo.

The tide tables have been wrong for three nights, and Mrs Penhale wants the almanac corrected before the Sunday boats go out. So you sit in the back room of the chandlery with a cold cup of tea and a tin of brass dividers, copying the night sky onto card. Every star is a pinprick, and every pinprick is a small argument with the paper. Outside, the harbour lamps buzz and the bell buoy off the point keeps its slow count.

Tomas from the lifeboat house comes in smelling of diesel and rain. He leans over your shoulder and taps the seventh point in the cluster above the breakwater. My father swore that was a net, he says, and that the net was how they found the Carrow boy in the winter of sixty-one, dragging the cove for a week. You had thought the constellation was a fisherman's fancy, but he traces the line with a thick finger and the dots fall into shape like knots.
When he has gone you look up through the skylight. Cloud has rolled over the point, and the net is gone from the sky, but you know where it hangs. You fetch the card, measure the gaps against the memory of his finger, and prick the missing star in, one dot more than the sky is showing tonight. Mrs Penhale will ask why the almanac has an extra light. You will tell her it is for the boy, and for whoever comes looking next.
