Celtic knot band with blue heart on wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo wrapping around the inner wrist, showing a band of interlaced Celtic knotwork. The knots are shaded in black and grey, and a central heart filled with light turquoise ink sits within the band. The soft focus background and even lighting keep attention on the tattoo.

Brother Osric had bound the abbey's psalters for thirty winters, and he knew the knot his master had shown him on his first day: a loop that goes under, comes round, and never finds its end. The cord that held the cloth to the spine had to be a single length, or the book would come apart in a damp year. So when the miller's girl climbed the hill asking for a band of cord to bind her betrothed's gift, he gave her a length he had kept back for himself.

She wanted a heart at the centre of it. Osric said hearts were for ribbons and the knot was for keeping things shut. She laughed at him and sat on the stone step while he worked, turning the cord with ink-stained fingers. The heart was for the sea, she said, because her lover had gone out to fish the western rocks, and the water there was the colour of the blue the nuns ground for the Virgin's cloak.
Osric pressed the cord into a heart and wove the loops tight around it, one over and one under, until the band held its shape with no loose end anywhere. He told her the knot had no beginning, so pulling at either side would never undo it. She tied it on his wrist instead of her own and said the blue would fade if he wore it too long. It did not fade. When the brothers buried him forty years later, the band was still on his arm, and it was the only thing in the crypt that nobody could find the end of.
