Four people hold hands, each with a black and grey realistic tattoo of feathers wrapped around the inner wrist.

Realistic feather bands on four wrists

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four wrists are shown close together with hands clasped, and each has a matching band of feathers curling around the wrist. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys, deep blacks and highlights that give the feathers depth and a three-dimensional look. The composition is tightly cropped on the wrists and hands, with the people's faces out of frame, and the tattoos sit centrally against plain skin and a neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the bean rows. Now, the wind in those days was a bird with no nest, and it flew over Harrowgate Hill looking for something to hold on to. It found four girls hanging washing in the orchard, and it dropped a single grey feather into each of their open hands.

The feathers would not let go. They curled round the wrist like a cuff of ribbon, barb by barb, and the girls laughed until they saw the wind's own shadow sitting on the wall, watching them with its wings folded. Old Mabel at the lych gate said the bird was lonely. Her grandmother said it was hungry. Nobody asked the girls what they thought, which is how these things usually go.

So the four of them went up the hill on a Sunday, hand in hand, their new cuffs pressed flat against each other's pulses. They walked the whole ridge and came down at dusk with the feathers gone soft and warm. When they reached the orchard the wind was waiting in the apple boughs, and it asked them, quite politely, which of them would fly.

None of them answered. They only tightened their grip, and the wind, which had never once in all its years been refused, stayed where it was in the branches and grew quiet. That is why the orchard still has its apples, and why, if you cross the hill on a still evening, you will find four grey feathers lying in the grass, always an even number, never one more.
