Treble clef heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black tattoo of a treble clef whose curls form the outline of a heart, with the lower stroke ending in a point. The linework is thin and even, with a small filled dot at the centre of the heart, and the design is shown in solid black ink with no shading. The wrist fills the centre of the frame against a plain black backdrop.

Dear Nell, the piano in the front parlour has gone flat again, and Mrs Pell insists it is the sea air getting into the hammers. I have told her the damp is in the walls, not the sea, but she only hands me another cup of tea and says I am not to fret. I am not fretting. I am counting the lodgers who come down to breakfast and the ones who do not.

The tuner came on Tuesday, a thin man with a steel fork he struck against his knee and then held to the wood, head tilted like a gull listening for fish. He said middle C had gone sour because someone had leaned a lamp against the case. I did not tell him that someone was me, the night the Hartley boy could not sleep and I played him the same four notes until he laughed into his pillow.

Here is the strange part. Yesterday I found the old songbook under the bench, its cover swollen brown from some long-ago tide. On the flyleaf someone had drawn a treble clef, and its curls had bent round into a heart, the lower stroke tapering to a point like a dropped pin. Beneath it, in pencil: for the one who listens. No name. I have thought about it all afternoon and decided it must have been Mr Pell, who sailed out on the Margaret in March and never came back.

I have set the songbook on the piano, open at that page. Tonight, when the wind comes round the headland, I shall play through it once, badly, and see whether the house hums back. Your loving sister, Ivy.
