A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas had been filing the same silver band for three days because Mairéad Hynes kept coming back to the forge door to ask if it was ready. The ring was not hard to make. Two hands, a heart held between them, a crown balanced on top like a lid on a pot. What took the time was the hands. His master said a pair of hands that looked like they were fighting would sell no rings in Galway, so Tomas kept bending the wire until the fingers curled gently inward.

Her man had gone out on the Clare boats in March and had not come back with the others. Tomas knew only that she stood in the doorway each morning with her shawl pulled tight, watching his hands. He soldered the join, then cut a crown from a scrap of silver and hammered its points until they were even. The old goldsmith had taught him that a crown should look like it was resting, not perched.

When the ring was polished he set it on the bench and she did not pick it up. "The heart is to be held, not worn," she said. "That's what he told me when he gave me the first one." Tomas turned the band so the crown faced outward and the hands cupped the heart. She laughed once, short and sharp, the way people do at something they had hoped to hear.

The Saturday tide brought the boats in low and slow. Tomas saw her run down the quay before the nets were off the deck, her bare hands already open in front of her, ready to receive something. He stayed at the forge door and let her have the quay to herself.
