He did not charge anyone. He stood at the circle of stones where the town's oldest well had been capped, and he lowered his great head as if reading the water. The stones were cut with rings, and the rings were cut with the marks of people long dead, bands of thorn and spiral and notch that the children of Harrowmere traced with wet fingers on feast days. The bull breathed on them. Frost came off his nostrils in a slow curl and settled into the grooves, and where it settled the lines went black, sharp as a blade on sheep's leather.
The thaw came early that year. Maud sold her last eel to the miller's boy and told him the bull had only wanted to be remembered properly. The boy asked how a beast could want anything. Maud shrugged, wiped her hands, and pointed at the stones. Every mark was there, every spiral and thorn, drawn fine and dark against the grey. The town has kept them that way ever since, and nobody has ever closed the gate after dark.
