Celtic knot on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black Celtic knot sits on the inner wrist and lower forearm, with a looped top above two interlaced lobes. The lines are solid black with soft grey shading along the edges, giving the knot some depth. The tattoo is centred on the frame against a plain beige wall, with the palm facing the camera.

The boats had been out since Tuesday, and still the women on the slip kept their hands moving over the nets. Nobody talked about the weather. They talked about cord, and the price of tar, and whether the Sheila Ann would take the back route past the Skerry or go wide like she always swore she would.

Old Morag had taught Isla the knot the winter they married. It began as a loop at the top, the way a bowline starts, then folded over itself into three lobes that wound in and out until the end tucked beneath the first crossing. You could not find where it began. Morag said a knot without a start or a finish was one a man could follow home by feel, even with the lamp gone out.
On the third night Isla sat on an upturned creel with a length of tarred line across her knees and tied it over and over, her fingers stiff with cold, the loop always coming back to the top. Somewhere past midnight the wind swung round to the north-west and the lobes drew tight under her thumb. She did not look up. She kept tying until the cord was too short to hold another crossing.
At first light the Sheila Ann came round the point with one sail torn and her dinghy towing behind, Ruairidh standing at the tiller as if he had never left it. Isla tied the last loop onto the mooring post and left the knot there. It was still on the post a year later, weathered grey, and nobody on the island ever untied it.
