Fine line tattoo of a blue and purple trinity knot with a small loop at the top, placed on the inner wrist and forearm.

Fine line trinity knot on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small trinity knot with a looped top sits on the inner wrist, drawn in thin, continuous lines. The outline combines blue and purple ink, which gives the linework a slightly uneven, faded tone. The tattoo is centred on a plain, pale patch of skin against a blurred indoor background, with a dark sleeve visible at the bottom of the frame.

Now then, sit down, the lot of you. The urn's only just boiled and Mrs Ackroyd has had her eye on that last custard tart since the bell. You've all come back to Ashworth Grammar expecting a speech about the gymnasium roof. You'll have a story instead, because I'm the only one here who still remembers where the grass ran down to the weir.

Three girls lived on the far bank of the Calder in the summer of 1961: Edie Marsh, Bet Lowther and little Nan Cass. They shared one dye vat behind the Lowthers' wash house. Bet's woad came out blue as a jay's back, and Nan had been stealing bramble juice from the hedge to colour her ribbons. One wet afternoon the two pots went over together, and the girls went in after the spill with their sleeves rolled to the elbow and their hands stained to the wrist.

That evening they sat on the weir wall and tied a length of thread round their wrists, three times over and under, so that the knot made three soft petals and a little loop at the top where Nan had caught it on her thumb. Edie swore nobody would ever pull it loose. Bet swore the same. Nan just laughed and said that was the trick of it, because a thing tied that snug only gets tighter when folk tug at it.

Edie went to Leeds in the autumn, and Bet married a man from the mill. I'll not tell you who kept the thread on longest, but I will tell you this. If you see Edie in the car park tonight, don't ask her about the blue. Just look at the loop at the top of the knot. It's still there, tied tight, same as the day we all got our hands wet.
