Triquetra knot on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black outline of a triquetra, a three-arc knot, sits on the inner wrist. A teardrop-shaped loop rises from the top of the knot, and the interlaced arcs are filled with a light grey wash. The plain background and soft natural light keep the focus on the tattoo.

Before the cockerel had decided whether it was worth the bother, Agnes Halloran was already at the trough with her sleeves pushed past the elbow. The oven under the lane had been lit since three, and the flour sacks still smelled of the mill at Carrow. Her mother had left a rule chalked on the beam: three strands for a loaf that must hold, and one pinch kept back for the last turn, or the bread would not keep the house.

Her sister Bet laughed at the rule, and her brother Tom said he had never seen a loaf fail, which was exactly why he had never looked closely. Agnes rolled the three strands under her palms and laid them over each other, over and under, the way the old baker had shown her when she was small enough to stand on a crate. At the top she left a small teardrop of dough standing up like a flame.
The bread went in with the window still black. Bet fell asleep on the sacks. Tom sang one verse of something about a ferryman and then stopped.
When the loaves came out, the crust was dark and the knot had risen clean, three arcs locked together with a single bead lifting from the crown. Agnes turned it on the rack and watched the first grey light come through the shutter and find the join. She did not tell her mother the rule had been kept. She set the loaf on the sill where the light would reach it first.
