Fine line triquetra-style knot on a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black line forms an interlocking knot with three looped petals at the base and a tall central loop rising above them. The linework is even and unshaded, with solid black ink. The tattoo sits centrally on a light skin tone foot, photographed from a close, slightly angled view against a dark background.

The rope came up from the Cold Drift with its end frayed like a shaving brush, and Maud Pryce would not let the foreman throw it on the scrap heap. She sat on the wet step of the engine house and worked the strands between her knuckles, three over, one under, the way her grandmother had shown her on a bootlace. Men went past with their lamps unlit and said nothing. A knot that comes back up is not a thing you argue with.

Her brother Evan had gone down on the Tuesday shift and not come up with the cage. The cage had stopped at the four-hundred mark with a groan like a cow in a stall, and then it had stopped altogether. Maud tied the first loop, then the second, drawing each one tight enough to sing. The third she pulled through the middle and left a tall narrow eye standing above the rest, the way a candle flame stands above its wick, so that a man feeling along the wall in the dark would know which way the rope ran.

The old women said the knot had three petals for the three ways out of the workings, and the lifted loop for the one way never marked on the plans. Maud did not believe that. She believed in rope. She went down the shaft herself on the Thursday, tied off to the ladder with the knot cinched at her waist, and called Evan's name until the water in the sump gave back her own voice.

They found him on the Saturday, sitting against a timber with his lamp out and one hand on a length of cord that ran back toward the shaft. He said the rope had felt warm the whole way. Maud coiled it up and hung it on the nail by the door, and it is still there, the tall loop pointing at the roof as if it were looking for the light.
