Celtic triquetra knot on the back of the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line black tattoo of a triquetra style knot with an extra loop rising from its upper point. The linework is even and bold, with no shading, and the design is shown in solid black ink. It sits centrally on the back of the neck against plain skin, with fingers holding hair to one side at the top of the frame.

Every morning before the bells at St Ebba's, Hester Lund banked the ovens with ash and went out to the yard to tie the knot. Three cords hung from the hook by the door, one red, one grey, one the colour of tallow, and she bound their ends together with a loop of her own hair so that no single hand could pull them apart.

The village had a saying about the bakery at Cold Harrow: bread rose better where three things held together. Nobody could say who had started it. The old women said a miller had once quarrelled with his brothers over a bridge, and the bridge had fallen, and the loaves had gone sour for a whole winter until the brothers came to the oven together and sat down on the same bench.
Hester's sister had gone down to the coast the spring before, and the grey cord had come back with a knot in it that was not Hester's own. She did not undo it. She retied the loop above it, and above that she set a second, smaller loop, the way their mother had shown them, so that the strands rose into a point that could be read from any side of the yard.
When the first cart rattled up the lane in the grey light, she lifted the knot from its hook, pressed it flat against the warm brick of the oven, and waited with the dough proving under cloth for the sisters to come home.
