Celtic knot with red heart

Mixed · Flash

The image shows a interwoven Celtic knot in dark brown and black, with a single red heart shape woven through its centre. The knotwork has smooth, uniform outlines with the red heart rendered in a solid, glossy fill that stands out against the rest of the design. The knot sits centred on a mottled, textured brown background with no body part visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Penhallow was twelve the summer the Harrowgate Travelling Show sold its last elephant, and she was the only one left who would still climb the riggings. Her father mended canvas by lamplight. Nobody paid to see the show any more, but the marsh villages still wanted a tent for a Saturday, so they went on.

Her grandmother had taught her a knot with no start and no end, three loops chasing each other round so that no pull could pick them apart. Tie it where the hard strain comes, the old woman said, and nothing gives way. Maud knotted it into the main guy line of the big top and worked her mother's red ribbon through the centre, so the joins showed like a heart. Her father said the ribbon was foolish. He let it stay.

In October the wind came off the Wash with rain behind it. The canvas bellied, the poles groaned, and one by one the stakes tore out of the mud. The main line held. Men ran out in their nightshirts and found the guy rope singing and taut, the red heart pulled tight against the grey sky, while the rest of the tent went flapping across the fields like a bird with its wings broken.

They never got the big top back. In spring they sold the poles for firewood and kept the rope, coiled in the wagon beside the lamp. Maud still ties the knot when she is frightened. When people ask why she keeps a frayed red ribbon in a show that has no crowds left, she says it is holding something up.
