Celtic triquetra and heart knot design

Colour · Flash

A single interlaced knot motif, a triquetra with a heart formed through its loops, rendered as a flat digital illustration. The strands are outlined in grey with red fills and a raised, shadowed edge, set against a mottled orange backdrop. The symmetrical composition is centred with even spacing around the design.

The ovens at Mrs Pargeter's were already breathing when Tomas came down the lane with the flour sacks, and the knot of red thread hung over the door the way it always did, three loops that wound into a heart when you looked at them long enough. Three sisters once kept that bakery, and they quarrelled the way sisters do, over who had kneaded the Sunday dough too slow and who had let the starter sour. Then the eldest went off with a sailor who promised her Lisbon, and the middle one married the miller's son out of spite, and the youngest stayed behind with the ovens and a tin of cinnamon that nobody else could get right. Years went by. Each of them, when she was alone at dawn, would tie a length of red wool into the knot over the door, and each wool knot tangled into the others until nobody could say whose was whose.

One morning Tomas found the knot had come loose from its nail and lay across the threshold like a dropped ribbon. He picked it up and felt the three lengths pull against each other, stubborn, no one winning. He carried it inside, and the youngest sister, now an old woman with flour in her eyebrows, took it from him without a word and rehung it. Then she slid a warm cinnamon bun across the counter and said, "Eat that before you start telling me what I did wrong."

He ate it standing up, the sugar catching on his lip, while the light came grey through the window and the red loops turned slowly above the door.
