The queen's cord broke for the third time on the feast of the autumn water, and by morning every knotter in Carrow Vale had been up to the hall and gone home shaking their heads. The cord was white as river foam, grey at its edges, woven so that its strands crossed and doubled back on themselves. A finger could follow one thread for an hour and come out where it began.

Idris Vell, the bridge-keeper's daughter, came last, because nobody had thought to send for her. She sat on the cold flags with the broken cord across her knees and did not look at the lords. She looked at the window, where the light had gone the colour the river turned before the lamps were lit, a blue that pooled low and would not leave. She traced one loop with her thumb for the length of a candle burning down.
"It was tied in anger," she said. "You can feel it. Every pull went the wrong way." The queen asked whether it could be mended. "Not as it is," said Idris. She sent a boy up the hill road for the black cord the herders used on their gates, the cord that swept up the slopes in long curves and never came back on itself. She laid it along the lower edge of the white knot and bound the two together with a plain half hitch, the first knot any child learns.
When the queen lifted it, the white knot lay quiet inside its black arms, and the evening blue seemed to sit behind it like water held back by a sluice. The lords said it was witchcraft. Idris said it only needed somewhere to stand. She walked home across her father's bridge that night, and the river ran blue beneath her all the way to the sea.
