Celtic knotwork cat design

Colour · Flash

A seated cat is drawn in red with its body and tail filled by interlaced Celtic knotwork and spiralling scrolls. The linework is solid and uniform, with no shading, and the detail is densest along the back, neck and tail. The cat sits on a beige, mottled background, with two straight red lines crossing the lower right of the frame.

Brother Anselm had trouble with the knot in the margin of the Kilmarrow gospel, the one that would never close. Each evening the abbey cat came in through the scriptorium window, grey at the ears, and sat on the lectern as though someone had asked it to.

Dun watched the red ink dry and took no interest in the work. When Anselm's hand shook with the cold, the cat would walk slowly across the vellum, and where its tail swept the page the interlace ran true. Anselm thought it was luck. Prior Gwydion thought it was the devil and wanted the cat put out in the rain. Dun only blinked and went back to washing one paw.

On the feast of Saint Brendan the border came loose. A single thread slipped in the knot, and then the scrolls began to unravel like wool from a snagged jumper, spirals going slack all along the page. Anselm sat with the candle guttering. Dun leapt onto the desk, pressed one paw to the vellum, and drew the spiral backwards, tail looping through the tangle, until every line locked shut with a sound like a latch dropping.

In the morning the prior found the page finished and the knot closed. Caught in the wet red ink was a single grey hair, running into the border as if it had always belonged there. Anselm never told him. He left the hair where it lay, and the cat went on sleeping on the warm end of the lectern, asking nothing of anyone.
