Chakra symbols stacked down a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Seven chakra symbols are stacked in a vertical column on the outer forearm, each enclosed in a circular, lace-like mandala border. The symbols use thin outlines and simple geometric shapes such as triangles, a hexagram and a central dot, with a bindu-style mark at the top. The ink appears metallic, in gold, silver and black, and the background is a soft-focus beach scene.

Sit nearer, and mind the lamp, it has already eaten two moths tonight. You want the tale of the seven doors? Then hear it on your feet, the way my grandmother gave it to me, because a story told sitting down goes soft at the edges.

In the river city of Varanna there was a tower called the Stair of Lamps, with seven doors set one above another, each a round window with a border like frost on a jug. Hesk the lamplighter was sent up because he had the steadiest knees and the least to lose. The first door was ringed in gold and held a tallow wick a child kept trimmed. The second was silver, and the woman who kept it made water-bowls sing by running wet thumbs round their rims. At the third, a black-inked clerk counted the nights in triangles pointing down. At the fourth, where two triangles lay across each other like folded hands, a mason who spoke only in sums asked, "How many doors have you passed?" He would not let Hesk by until he answered, "Four, and I am not finished."

By the sixth door his lamp had gone out, so he climbed by the light of the others, which was enough. The seventh door was no door at all, only a bright dot set into the stone, no wider than a lentil. He leaned close and saw his own face in it, small and lit from every side, with the six doors below stacked like rings on a spindle.

Hesk did not light it. He sat down on the top step and waited, because an unlit lamp is the only one that shows you the stair you came up. That is why the old women say you should count your doors on the way down, and never trust the dark at the top.
