A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Thorley heard the bull before she saw him. The snow had drifted halfway up the stable door, and over the wind came the sound of timber splitting, then a slow, heavy stamping that shook the dust from the rafters above the taproom. Her father's red bull, Gideon, bought at Kendal fair the autumn before, had pulled his tether free and was trying the barn walls one by one.

She took the lantern from its hook and pulled her shawl tight. In the yard the snow lay blue under the moon, and the bull stood in the middle of it, head lowered, black mane steaming, his cream horns bright as bone in the lamplight. Behind her the travellers stacked against the taproom window to watch. Ivo Pask, the carter who had been stranded with them since Tuesday, came to the door with his coat half on. "Let me fetch the pitchfork," he said. "He'll have your arm off."

"He'll have the gate off if we fuss," Maud said, and set the lantern down on the step.

Her grandmother had taught her the trick as a girl. Never meet the horns straight on. Stand where the shoulder turns, keep your hands open, and hum something dull. So Maud walked out across the drift, humming the tune her grandmother used to sing over the churn, and kept her eyes on the place where the black mane met the red hide. The bull lifted his head. He blew out a long grey breath, and his tail, which had been lashing, curled up over his back like a question he had decided not to ask.

By morning the wind had dropped and the sky had cleared to a hard, pale yellow. Ivo left two coins on the counter for the feed. Out in the yard, the bull's hoofprints ran back through the drift to the stable door in a neat dark line, and Maud stood on the step with her cold hands wrapped around a cup, watching them the whole way.
