Tiger, cat and azaleas on an upper arm

Japanese · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A tiger prowls low across the design with a black and white cat draped over its back, both framed by pink azalea blossoms, green leaves and grey cloud shapes. The tiger is shaded in yellow and orange with bold black stripes and green eyes, while the cat has smooth black and white markings and closed eyes. Bold outlines and saturated colour fill the composition, which wraps around the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at the reunion would admit to remembering the tiger, though every one of them had drawn it at least once. In the year the school moved its gates, a tiger came up out of the azalea bank behind the bicycle sheds, and it lay there through the long afternoons with a black and white cat asleep across its back. The cat was called Pim. Nobody owned her. The tiger had no name at all, because the head teacher had decided that a thing which could not be sent to the office did not need one.

The children learned quickly that the tiger only stood up when someone was about to be cruel. One wet Tuesday Ruth Fenwick pulled Pim's tail to see what would happen, and the tiger rose slow as a hill coming up out of fog, the cloud shapes curling off its shoulders. Pim did not open her eyes. Ruth said sorry before she had finished being frightened, and the tiger lay down again, and that was the only lesson anybody needed.

At the reunion, Ruth was a dental nurse now, with grey coming through her fringe, and she brought a lemon sponge in a tin that had once belonged to her mother. She asked the room who remembered the azaleas. Thirty-one hands went up, some of them slowly. Then the car park lamps flickered, and in the hedge beneath the hall window, where the bushes had been replanted, something low and striped breathed out.

Nobody went to look. They ate the cake. Ruth said the cat's name aloud, and the hedge gave a sound like a purr, and the azaleas beside the car park glowed pink under the lamps in the middle of February, as if somebody had been keeping them for the children.
