Pink blossom branch on an arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A branch of pink five-petalled blossoms, possibly dogwood, climbs diagonally across the skin with thin stems and small green leaves. The petals are shaded in soft gradients of pink and red with yellow centres, giving a painted watercolour effect. The design sits on a light, plain background that keeps focus on the flowers.

The dogwood at the edge of Harrowcombe had flowered every spring since the first stone of the church was laid, and every spring the old women said it was the only tree in the valley that never lied about the weather. When the frost came late, the blossom stayed shut and kept its colour in its heart until the ground was ready. Ruth Penhallow learned this from her grandmother, who learned it from a woman whose name nobody could remember anymore.

The spring the miller's boy went over the weir, Ruth walked up to the dogwood with a jug of cold tea and sat under it until the light went. She did not speak to the tree. She only pressed her palm flat against the bark and waited for the sap to tell her something, the way it always did for those who asked properly. Nothing came. Instead a petal drifted down and settled on her wrist, pink at the edges and paler toward the middle, with a small yellow eye at its heart.
She carried it home in her sleeve. In the morning there were six more branches of blossom on the lintel of the mill house, though no one had climbed the tree, and the miller's wife came out in her apron and stood looking up at them for a long time. Ruth did not tell her what the old women said, that a dogwood only blooms in a valley where someone has been grieving honestly enough to be counted. She simply went back up the lane, and the petals kept falling behind her all the way to the water.
