Fine line tattoo of a pink flower with a stem and script lettering along the collarbone, on a woman wearing a dark floral top.

Pink flower and script on collarbone

Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A pink flower with soft red shading and small green leaves sits at the edge of the collarbone, with a thin black stem running into fine, cursive script lettering. The linework is delicate and the flower is shaded in pink and red with some detail in the petals. The photo is taken indoors near a window blind, with the subject's dark top and skin tones making the colour of the flower stand out.

Dear Ilse, the seed drawer stuck again this morning, so I had to work the flat knife under it the way Oma used to. Inside was the packet you asked about, the pink one with the thin stalk, and I finally read its label properly. Someone had written a single word across the bottom in the careful hand they taught before the grid went down, and the ink had faded to the grey of wet ash. I could make out only the middle of it. I spent the afternoon matching loops against the archive scans until the lamp oil ran low.

The bloom itself is still alive in the north tray. Three years ago I was sure it had gone for good, a dry stalk in a cracked cup, but Dael moved it under the strip lights and talked to it, which I told him was foolish. On the ninth morning a single frill of red showed at the rim. Its leaves are the green of old bottle glass. Its petals are the colour of the inside of a shell, deepest where they meet the stem, as if someone had brushed the shading on with a wet thumb.

The word, I think, is surely. I know it is an odd thing to find pressed into a seed packet, but the old people put their promises on everything, even on things they could not keep. I have decided it was a note from someone who was not certain of much, and wanted at least one thing to be sure. So I am sending you the seeds in the packet, and a cutting wrapped in damp moss, which will travel better inside your coat than in the pack.

Plant it where the sun comes through the blinds in the afternoon, the way it did in the old photograph Dael found. Write back and tell me whether it flowers. Surely it will. Love, Marit.
