Cherry blossom branch on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A branch of cherry blossoms with open five-petalled flowers, buds, thin stems and small leaves runs diagonally across the outer thigh. The tattoo is drawn in delicate, slightly sketchy outline with soft shading and very little fill, so the skin shows through. The ink is a pale lilac and grey, and the image is softly lit with a light, muted background of white fabric.

Hush now, and pass the bread along, because Old Nell has promised to tell the one about the wedding at Coldharbour, and she never tells it twice with the same ending. Every spring the orchard behind the church flowered all at once, and that year the bride's mother had nothing to give her daughter but a branch cut from the oldest tree, wrapped in wet muslin and carried eleven miles in a cart.

The branch did not survive the journey. By the time the cart rolled into the yard the blossom had gone the colour of weak tea, and the bride wept into her collar until a travelling inker called Ambrose Dell, who had been sleeping under the hay wagon, offered to help. He had no fresh flowers to copy, only a memory of the tree, so he drew it in grey and lilac on a folded sheet of sailcloth, so light that the cloth showed through every petal and the flowers seemed to be drifting off the page.
At the feast the sheet was pinned to the barn door, and the wind kept lifting it. Real petals, a handful someone had gathered from the churchyard path, blew across the drawing and stuck there, until the picture looked more alive than the branch had ever been. Ambrose took no fee. He asked only that the bride's mother tell him, when the orchard bloomed again, whether the petals had landed where he had meant them to.
Nell always pauses here. The mother said nothing for a long time. Then she walked out under the trees, found one fallen petal on the path, and pressed it flat inside the book where she kept her marriage lines, and that, says Nell, is why the church still sweeps the path before every wedding and leaves one petal lying where a guest can find it.
