Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A three-panel photo of a wraparound thigh tattoo showing a wavy vine with white flowers, leaves and small planets, one with a crescent moon. The linework is delicate and fine, with light shading on the petals and leaves. Most of the design is black and grey, with a few blue planets and touches of colour adding accents across the band.

The frost had got into the water trough again, so Ada broke the skin of ice with the heel of her boot before she let the ewes near it. Her brother's old mare stamped and blew in the far stall. Behind the barn the clematis nobody had pruned since August ran along the top rail of the orchard gate, its seedheads grey and feathery, and every morning she promised herself she would cut it back before the hard weather set in.

Thomas had planted it the year they married, a cutting from their mother's garden wall in Sherborne, trained up a length of hazel. He said it would flower white by June, and it had, though he never saw a second summer. Now the stems wandered up the posts and across the gate in a wavy line, tangled with bramble and a few stubborn sloes, and in the grey hour before the lamps she caught herself counting the seedheads the way he used to count lambs.
One evening in late January, with the wind dropped, she climbed onto the gate to reach the highest tangle and saw the sky over the ridge clearing, a pale planet hanging low and a thin crescent moon snagged in the brambles like something a child had left behind. She stayed there longer than the cold allowed. Then she went indoors, found the secateurs in the kitchen drawer, and came back out with the torch.
She cut only the dead stems. The living ones she tied loosely to the rail with baler twine, leaving a gap where the frost had bitten through, and she let the rest stand for the goldfinches. In the morning the trough was clear, the ewes were fed, and the moon had gone down behind the hill, but the vine stayed where it was, wavy and white with rime, holding its place along the gate.
