Galaxy cat portrait on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cat's face fills the upper arm, with large bright blue eyes, a pink nose and long white whiskers. The cat is shaded in realistic detail and its features blend into a background of purple, pink and blue nebula with scattered white stars and small planets on the left. The vivid colour is applied across the whole design, and the cat's head is framed centrally on the arm.

The snow had shut the Carrick Pass road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday Mrs Hadley had stopped counting the guests who were not coming. Only the cat seemed unbothered. Its name was Morrow, a grey-and-black tom with a torn left ear, and it had taken the warm flagstones beside the bread oven as its own.

On the third night a traveller came in off the moor with frost in his beard and a lantern that had gone out. He asked for a bed and a fire. Mrs Hadley gave him the settle, and when he had eaten he asked why the cat's eyes were so blue, as if they held the sky. She said nobody knew. Her grandmother had said Morrow had once gone out past the last hill in a hard winter and come back with the dark still on its fur, dusted with little lights.
That night the roof hatch was left open to clear the smoke, and the traveller woke to find the cat on the sill with its face turned up. The clouds had gone and the stars lay thick as spilt salt. Two of them seemed to drift nearer, one ringed like a copper bowl, one the colour of a banked ember. Morrow watched them with the patience of something that knew their names.
In the morning the pass was open and the traveller paid for his bed with a silver coin he did not remember owning. Mrs Hadley swept the hearth and found a single white whisker on the flagstone, long as a thread, faintly glowing where the sun touched it. She kept it in the tin with the matches, and when the snow came again she held it up to the window to see whether the lights were still there.
