Cheshire Cat grin on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, showing its wide toothy grin, pale green eyes and pink nose. The fur is rendered with fine shading and soft blended strokes in teal, blue-green and grey, with darker stripes along the body. The design fills the frame on the outer thigh, with the cat curled and facing forward.

On the Thursday the mainland solicitor came over with a sealed envelope for the widow Dunning, and the cat sat on his bag the whole way up the path to her door. He wanted to know why it looked at him like that. Mara told him it was only the weather in its face. He did not laugh. Inside the envelope was a deed to a strip of cliff nobody had walked on since the war, and the widow read it twice and then began to laugh herself, a high rattling sound that went on until she had to sit down on the step.

"Forty years I've been asking that man for the cliff," she said, wiping her eyes. "Forty years he said no, and now the cat's gone and sat on his papers."

Mara looked for the cat and found only its grin, which hung in the air above the bollard for a moment after the rest of it had gone, teeth and all, like the last line of a joke nobody wanted to be the first to explain. Then the tide came in and took the slipway, the solicitor missed the boat, and Mara decided she would never again trust a sealed envelope.
