Cheshire Cat tattoo on upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo

A grinning Cheshire Cat head with large teal eyes and a wide toothy smile fills the centre of the design. The linework is bold, with shaded grey fur and teal highlights along the head, while dark swirling smoke or shadow frames the cat on all sides. The tattoo is photographed on the upper back against plain skin and foliage in the background.

At ten past three the staff kitchen on Ward Seven smelled of burnt toast and bleach, and Maureen Okafor had been on her feet for nine hours. She turned to the kettle and saw the grin before anything else: a crescent of teeth hanging in the dark window above the sink, far wider than any face had a right to be, with two green lamps for eyes that had no business being on a hospital ward at all.

She knew the tricks tired eyes played. She blinked, ran the tap, and the grin was still there, floating over the car park lights in the glass. "Right then," she said to it, because talking to things was cheaper than panicking. "Who sent you up from A and E?" The grin widened. Behind her, the linen cupboard clicked shut on its own.

Over the next hour things went missing and turned up in odd places: a pair of forceps on the windowsill of bed four, a biro balanced on the sluice room tap, a drip line coiled neatly on the floor like a tail. Each time, the grin came back in whatever glass was nearest, patient and pleased with itself. Each time Maureen muttered that she had enough to do without a cat hunting through her ward.

At half four, Mr Pell in bay two woke asking for his wife and said the lady in the corner had been keeping him company. Maureen checked the corner. There was only the cold radiator and a cup of tea she had not made. She sat down beside it, and it was still warm. She drank it. When she looked up, the window was just a window again, but a small teal feather lay on the counter next to the kettle, and the kettle had been filled for two.
