Cheshire Cat tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo

A Cheshire Cat design with a broad grinning mouth, large round eyes and a curled striped body is outlined in thin lines. The ink appears to be ultraviolet-reactive, glowing blue under black light, with some darker shading in the smile and eyes. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame, with a blue lace garment edge at the right and plain skin around the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The generator coughs twice, then catches, and the black lamp over the cat booth comes on with a sound like a struck bell. Across the midway the painted canvas turns the colour of deep water. Its grin hangs above the candyfloss stall like a slice of moon, and the lads on the waltzers stop with their hands on the bars to stare. You know you shouldn't be in here after closing. You came anyway, because Mr Pell told you it only shows its face to people who owe it something.

Mr Pell bought the cat off a canal boatman at Wigan for a crate of gin and a promise nobody remembers making. He says it sleeps all day in the ghost train's cellar and waits for the lights to fail. You have never owed anyone anything you could not pay back, but you have owed Mr Pell eleven pounds since April, and the fair leaves town on Sunday. So you duck under the flap, past the stacked crates and the smell of paraffin, and find the cat already sitting on its stool.

It is larger than the drawing on the banner, its striped body curled like a sleeping bolster, its eyes two pools that keep catching the light. 'Pell's debt,' it says, barely moving its mouth. 'Pay it with something true.' You think of the coat you sold in March and told your mother had been stolen. You say so. The grin stays exactly where it is, but the stripes go still, and the cat tips its head towards the flap as if you have passed a test nobody else has bothered to set.

'Go on, then,' it says. 'Walk home by the lamps.' When you step back out, the midway is dark and the rides have gone quiet. The only light left is a faint blue haze drifting over the grass, and the slow grin of it follows you all the way to the gate.
