It wasn't a card, not really. It was a sticker he'd peeled from the inside of a crisp packet, a soft pink creature curled round the edge of a bin lid, with blue eyes that someone's thumb had smudged. He wanted two pounds fifty for it. I had one pound and a bus pass. We settled on a sherbet dip and my promise never to tell Mrs Ashdown where he'd got the chalk for the hopscotch squares.

Dean was at the far table now, bald on top, telling a story with both hands. When he spotted me he raised his glass and grinned the same lopsided grin, and I realised I had been carrying that sticker around in my head for twenty-six years like an unpaid debt. I walked over, sat down and said, "You still owe me a pound fifty."

He laughed until he coughed. Then he dug in his jacket and set a scuffed pink sticker on the table between us, its tail curled tight. "Kept it for you," he said. "Figured you'd come looking."
