Cheshire Cat tattoo on the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A cartoon Cheshire Cat with a wide grin and large round eyes, shown on skin under ultraviolet light that makes the outline glow blue. The smile and eyes carry black and grey shading, while the body and tail are drawn in thin, lighter lines. The tattoo sits across the upper back, with blue lace fabric along the right edge of the frame.

Mabel Quill had been told three times by the Chancellor of Harrowmere that the royal decrees would not be copied in violet ink, and three times she had mixed it anyway, because violet was the only colour that showed what the court tried to hide. She tilted the lamp over the parchment, and the lines of the decree lit up like frost on a window. Beneath the official seal, someone had drawn a grin.

The grin belonged to the Cat of the Yew Hedge, who had lived in the palace gardens since before Harrowmere had a name. Nobody had seen the body in a hundred years. There was only the grin hanging above the topiary and a pair of round blue eyes blinking from the sundial. Mabel had grown up thinking it was a nursemaid's tale. Now the decree claimed the eastern orchards had been sold to a gentleman called Mr Nobody, and the grin on the page seemed to widen as the ink glowed.
She carried the lamp down to the hedge at dusk. "You could have told someone," she said. The grin drifted closer, and the eyes opened beside it. "I told the hedge," said the cat, "and the hedge told the wind, and the wind told you. Nobody else was listening."
By morning she had written the Chancellor's lie across every yew leaf in violet, and the whole garden shone in the dawn like a map of its own deceit. The courtiers came out in their nightclothes to stare. The guards at the gate, who could never see the grin by daylight, saluted the empty air where it had hung, and it was said that the cat smiled wider than ever.
