The bow had been Queen Oriel's idea, and nobody in the Palace of Lantern Mere had ever found the nerve to tell her that the cat did not want it. Pipkin wore it the way a duke wears a sash, chin up and blue eyes half closed, as if the whole court were a sunbeam he had personally arranged.

Every morning the bow was retied by the laundry girl, Hesper, who kept a pocket of pink ribbon scraps and a bad habit of talking to the cat as though he were the only sensible person in the building. "You're a scandal, you know," she said one wet spring, pinning the loop straight. Pipkin yawned at her. He had heard worse from the chancellor.

The trouble came at the midsummer fair, when the kingdom's cartographers laid a silver map across the courtyard flags to prove the borders were still where they had always been. A gust off the lake lifted the bow clean off his head and dropped it exactly over the disputed river. Ministers gasped. Pipkin padded across the silver, sat down on the ribbon, and began to wash one ear.

By dusk the river had been declared neutral, the chancellor had been sent to bed with a cold compress, and Hesper was still laughing in the scullery. Nobody in the kingdom ever agreed on who had really settled the matter, though the cat, when asked, only blinked slowly and looked pleased with himself.
